about

Prickly Pear (Michael Occhipinti/Occhestral Music)

Soloists: Part a) Roy Styffe (alto sax), Part b) Kenny Kirkwood, Ernie Tollar, Roy Styffe (alto saxophones),

Prickly Pear is a 3-part composition, inspired by immigration and identity. The prickly pear cactus is found all over Sicily and is used to make everything from gelato to sweet liquor, and many people think of it as a native plant. However, it actually was brought over from the Americas, but in keeping with the general misconception around the plant, its Italian names translates to "fig of India" because of course, Columbus and other explorers were looking for a route to Asia when they landed in America.

The three sections are called "Partenza" (departure), "Nella Citta" (in the city), and "Ridere e Piangere" (to laugh and to cry). The last section was actually composed first, and though it's not based on any particular tune, it is inspired by a variety of Italian music, including what my parents listened to and sang along with, as well as some Easter Procession music I used to hear annually in Toronto's east end.
