The Nelson Algren Suite is inspired by a number of short stories and the novel "The Man With The Golden Arm" written by Nelson Algren. These tales of Polish southside Chicago are rich in their colourful characters and gritty scenes. Part a - Southside Waltz, functions as an overture to the piece, with our drummer John Obercian representing the drummer character of Frankie Machine. Part b - Blues for Frankie Machine plays on the tensions in Frankie's life and employs cliched music from his Polish background and his American present.
